Church of St. Saviour in Chora which contains some of the most outstanding Byzantine mosaics and frescoes to be found in Istanbul. Rebuilt in the 8th century on the site of an earlier church which existed outside the walls of Constantine’s city, the church was rebuilt again in the 12th century and yet again in the 14th century. The mosaics and fresco decorations illustrate Christian belief through the portrayal of Gospel stories and miracles in picture-book sequence. Hidden beneath plaster and whitewash for many years, recent restoration efforts have produced magnificent results.
